What is Pilates exercise?

Philosophy
The Pilates exercise method was founded in the principles of calisthenics and yoga to promote the integration of the mind and body. Through the six main principles of centering, concentration, control, breath, precision, and flow, the body is appropriately challenged with flexibility and strengthening exercises while the mind is engaged through imagery to more readily understand and integrate these concepts.

Approach
Initial Pilates exercise sessions or classes challenge and strengthen the core muscles of the body, promoting stability in the pelvis and torso, and toning the abdominals, but, and thighs. Strength and flexibility exercises for the arms, lower legs and feet are also incorporated to improve mobility and flexibility in the joints. Stability in the pelvis and torso along with mobility and flexibility in the hips and shoulders can greatly reduce chronic pain and promote healing throughout the body while vastly improving sports performance for sports and creating a longer, leaner appearance. The approach to Pilates exercise offered at Reflexion is based on Master Trainer Kelly Kane's certification school, The Kane School of Core Integration. The Kane School's certification program includes training in biomechanics and anatomy, knowledge essential for tailoring sessions to each specific client.

Integration
Once integration of the mind and body is achieved through consistent practice, you will no longer have to consciously choose to move with balance, grace, and efficiency. It will happen effortlessly.

Training Formats
Exercises can be performed on a floor mat, allowing for home workouts, or on Pilates equipment. Specific exercises are chosen within each session or mat class to appropriately challenge your fitness level. By working within your present capabilities and gradually increasing the challenge over time, your mind and body can gradually digest and integrate these principles into daily life.

Floor Mat

The floor mat consists of a series of exercises using gravity as resistance. The greater the range of movement, the more difficult the exercise. More details are incorporated as your understanding increases which increases the challenge.
No more than 10 repetitions are completed during each exercise. This allows for more exercises to be performed during this well-rounded workout.

Equipment

Pilates equipment utilizes
spring resistance. This resistance gradually increases as the springs are stretched. This provides greater resistance at the muscle's strongest point of contraction and less resistance on the initiation and completion of the contraction. This exercise approach reduces stress on tendons and ligaments.
